In 2007 the ESA set up the programme entitled “Iris” for the development and validation of a new satellite-based communication service, a safety system of fundamental importance for the future of air traffic management. The film explains why air traffic can be directed more efficiently using data connections than by human communication via radio equipment and how Iris contributes to increasing flight safety.
During the last 10 years the volume of air traffic has grown considerably; Europe now has the greatest air traffic density in the world. As a result of this increase in flights, popular aviation hubs such as Frankfurt, London or Paris often suffer from cancelled flights and delays. The European Commission has initiated the transnational European air traffic management research programme “Sesar”, which is additionally supported by “Iris”, as an answer to this problem. It focuses on the establishment of coordinated European airspace with improved safety for air passengers.
