Frank De Winne answers questions from space

In May 2009 Frank De Winne flew to the International Space Station ISS with his American and Russian astronaut colleagues in a Soyuz spacecraft. From there he answered questions asked by the Internet community which were submitted via the ESA YouTube channel during his six-month mission. He described his everyday life in space via the ESA YouTube channel and explained about some of the tasks and experiments on which he worked while in space.

Can you feel the speed of the ISS?

Paul from Portugal asked Franke de Winne, whether astronauts can feel the speed of the ISS, while doing a space walk.

The YouTube astronaut channel is part of the ESA “Public Outreach” campaign that was designed and realised by XPERIENCIA. Our tasks included the production of the campaign video, the pre-selection of questions and the maintenance of the YouTube channel.

Anybody who had access to a webcam and an Internet connection could post their questions as a video answer on the ESA channel. The Frank De Winne mission is not just in demand from Internet users, however, it is also a major attraction in museums and exhibitions. Custom-built computer terminals enabled groups of visitors to become integrated and submit their questions to Frank De Winne throughout the entire mission.
